History

On June 18th 1812, the United States of America declared war on Great Britain, initiating a conflict that would last for almost four years and be fought not only on North America, but across the world's seas. There were several goals behind the US declaration, from protecting its sovereignty against the British at sea to eyeing the fertile farmlands and forests of British North America (now Canada).

Neither the British nor the American army was prepared for war, despite all the sword rattling. British North America was manned by a meager force of regular soldiers scattered from the Atlantic coast to the western Great Lakes. These "redcoats" were supplemented by civilian militias of various quality, some drilled regularly, others literally called off their farms to take up arms.

The American effort had more enthusiasm going for it than it did weaponry or preparation. Initial invasions of Canada were mismanaged disasters fought by some blue-coated regulars, but mostly by roused militias in all manner of organization and dress.

(L to R) British Infantry, British Artillery and Upper Canadian Militia, all mounted on ATKM's wooden bases. The paper flags come with a British army set!

It wasn't until 1813 and '14 that the tide of the land war turned to American favor. Young, ambitious generals emerged to replace those who had started the affair. Leaders such as Winfield Scott whipped their men into a fit fighting force. Victories won on land were combined with American naval successes on the Great Lakes, forcing the British to retreat from the American border.

But the American momentum was short lived. War with France finally came to an end in 1814, allowing Great Britain to divert troops from Europe to North America. Ship-borne veteran soldiers were now able to attack anywhere along the American coast. This new turn resulted in the flight of Congress from Washington and the burning of the capital. Newly available forces also allowed the British to attack New Orleans in early 1815, where they were defeated by a ramshackle army assembled by Andrew Jackson.

The Treaty of Ghent, signed in early 1815, finally brought hostilities to an end. As in any war, both sides claimed victory. Little land actually changed hands. Borders were drawn hard between the countries. But America did establish itself as a contender in world military affairs.

The Figures & Sets

We really pulled out the stops on this line! It consists of 20+ different bodies that combine with over a dozen different heads to allow for innumerable combinations of troop types.

The line begins with two Army in a Box sets, one for the Americans and one for the British. You choose! Each set comprises more than 50 figures (5 pounds of figures!), with all kinds of accessories:

2 Infantry Units (12 soldiers + 2 command)

1 Skirmisher Unit (6 soldiers + 2 command)

1 Artillery Unit (4 gunners + 2 command + 6-pound cannon + gear)

4 Disorder Markers (falling dead soldiers)

6 Casualties (plastic)

1 Mounted General*

1 Stone Wall

2 Hills

1 Split-rail Fence (24 inches long)**

3 Trees*

1 "All the King's Men" Wargame Rulebook and Reference Card

A single set allows you to field an army, complete with the ATKM wargame rules, ready to fight a "friend" with the opposing set. Ordering two or more sets at a time awards you a free log firing position.
Shipping on Army in a Box sets is fixed at a flat $10 per set in the Continental US. International orders will be charged extra based on destination.

All figures are white metal, while prone casualties and horses are sturdy plastic to keep them light. All figures come unpainted.

BAGGED FIGURES AND ACCESSORIES

Also available are bagged sets of the same figures, listed below. The figures come unpainted. Assortments of figures are based on the "All the King's Men" wargame rules.

CARE AND FEEDING OF ATKM MINIATURES

We recommend washing all plastic figures with a mild detergent before painting. Metal and plastic figures should be primed with a quality primer. If parts are bent, gently bend them back into position. Both acrylic- and lacquer-based paints bring ATKM miniatures to life. Practice good hygiene when working with miniatures.
